LawLab: our Agentic Watchdog for Legislation, featured on WIRED

What does the Agentic State look like in practice? In Estonia, our co-author Luukas Ilves built LawLab, an AI system that reads every draft bill before the Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament, and hunts for the kind of errors that usually surface only after a law is passed — when they are expensive to fix. The project was inspired by exactly such a case: a drafting mistake that ended up costing an estimated €28 million.

LawLab works as an automated analysis pipeline: it ingests each bill directly from the parliament’s public data, runs the full text through multiple AI analysis passes, and flags legal and drafting problems — inconsistencies, conflicting provisions, unclear definitions — classifying every finding as high, medium, or low risk. Results are published openly, updated continuously as bills move through proceedings, and available through a public API, so anyone can scrutinise both the legislation and the tool itself. The methodology, including prompts and known limitations, is documented in the open.
